Valve unveils its stab at the suddenly popular Defense of the Ancients RTS/RPG subgenre with Dota 2

Publisher/developer Valve Software announced Dota 2 on Wednesday, a sequel to the Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Agents that has created a role-playing game/real-time strategy subgenre of its own.

Announcing the game in a detailed Game Informer story, Valve plans to have Dota 2 ready for a 2011 release for the PC and the Mac. The Game Informer story doesn't have details on whether Dota 2 is going to be a retail/digital release or only digital. GamePro contacted Valve for further details on the game -- including the coaching system detailed in the Game Informer story that allows "veterans" to assist less-experienced gamers -- and is awaiting comment.

Right now, two other games are capitalizing on DOTA. Riot Games' League of Legends won the audience award at last week's GDC Online. Developed by a team that includes luminaries from DOTA: Allstars, League of Legends is free to play and functions off a microtransaction payment model (you may also purchase retail editions as well). S2 Games' Heroes of Newerth charges for a lifetime subscription.

Defense of the Ancients is a mod for Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne. The player gets one powerful hero that they use to take on an opposing hero with the help of A.I. controlled units on a map.
