Netflix goes disc-free for PS3 and Wii

Netflix no longer requires a disc on the PS3 or Wii. The streaming video content service announced this morning that a Netflix application is available in the Wii Shop Channel.

The free application installs Netflix on the Wii menu, allowing users to directly stream video content to the Wii. Prior to this, users had to insert a disc before launching Netflix on the Wii and PS3.

Naturally, users need to have a Netflix account to use the service, and must activate the accounts via the Netflix web site. Netflix membership plans start at $8.99 a month ($7.99 in Canada). Netflix for PS3 offers Dolby Digital Plus support (7.1 channels of surround sound), and Blu-Ray quality video.

To sign up for Netflix on Wii, visit www.netflix.com/wii. For PS3 owners, visit www.netflix.com/ps3. Existing Netflix members need to logon to their platform of choice, get a code, and go to one of the links listed above to activate their accounts.
