CTIA 2005 Serenity Hands-On

We piloted a near-final version of Serenity at CTIA 2005.

SAN FRANCISCO--Serenity is a traditional vertical shooter set in the continuum of the upcoming film. Strangely enough, Serenity mobile is the only piece of digital entertainment based on this property--a fact decried by the franchise's many fans. Every movie needs a game or eight. Indiagames has made a pretty conventional shooter here, but what we saw suggested an overall high level of quality.

In Serenity, you pilot the titular ship through heavily guarded areas. You needn't fire on every ship, however. Some should simply be avoided, while other smaller ships can be absorbed into Serenity for a weapons upgrade. By nabbing small vessels and upgrading in between missions, you can build quite a lot of firepower into your ship and a purchasable escort.

The version of Serenity we played was imbued with Immersion's haptic technology. Force feedback isn't something we think about often, probably because it just works most of the time. On mobile, however, devices usually just vibrate in a disorganized way, and that vibration rarely corresponds (in terms of sensitivity and rumble pattern) to the animations onscreen and the sounds being played. The haptic technology was noticeable right away, and it actually added a lot to the game's immersion, hence the company's name.

A simple minigame broke up the action every few levels. You must guide your ship through narrow corridors, avoiding any obstacles in your path. We weren't sure what these sequences were supposed to represent, but they provided a nice break from enemy vessels (presumably from The Alliance).

Serenity's launch is a week away, so the build we saw was near-final. It looked and sounded pretty good, although the frame rate could stand to be improved. In any case, Serenity fans finally have a game to look forward to.
