Sonic Generations officially announced

Sega has finally revealed the details of what it's up to with Sonic -- as expected, the new game is called Generations and looks like a fitting celebration of Sonic's 20th birthday.

Sega has finally stopped teasing the world's Sonic fans and announced the details of Sonic Generations. The new game promises to "deliver the definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new" and allows players to play as both the 1991 incarnation of Sonic as well as the "modern day video game hero he has become."

The game features a time-travelling storyline, which acts as a convenient justification for Sonic to appear in both his "Classic" (1991) and "Modern" (Dreamcast and beyond) forms.

The most interesting thing about the game is the fact that each environment in the game is playable in both 2D side-scrolling mode as well as the 3D style from the more recent games. The two incarnations of Sonic each have their trademark special moves to use, too -- Classic Sonic has Spin Dash and Spin Attack, while Modern Sonic has his Homing Attack and Sonic Boost with which to cause havoc.

Sega also promises an "innovative new interactive menu system which allows for complete immersion in Sonic's universe with favorite characters and hidden treasures gradually being revealed throughout the game." Translated out of press release-speak, it sounds like there will be plenty of unlockable content for fans to enjoy. It would certainly be appropriate for Generations to explore the characters and settings of Sonic's 20 year history for this celebratory title. Perhaps this will finally be the Sonic game that makes everybody happy?
